psi to kPa Converter

Convert pressure between psi and kPa in either direction using the calculator below. Check the formula and reference values when reviewing HVAC, chilled-water, pump, or pressure-test readings.

Type in either field. The other one updates as you type.

psi to kPa formula

kPa = psi × 6.8947573

psi = kPa ÷ 6.8947573

The factor is 6.8947573 kPa for each 1 psi. Going the other way, 1 kPa is 0.14503774 psi.

Where this conversion is used

Chilled water and condenser water pressures, pump heads, refrigerant pressures and pressure test values are shown in psi on many gauges and US data sheets, and in kPa or bar in metric specifications. Use this conversion when you record a hydraulic test, read a refrigerant gauge or check a pump selection. 1 bar is 100 kPa, so dividing the kPa result by 100 gives the pressure in bar.

Worked example

A chilled water piping pressure test is specified at 150 psi and the test certificate must be filled in kPa.

150 psi × 6.8947573 = 1,034.21 kPa

Record a test pressure of about 1,034 kPa.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing gauge and absolute pressure. psig is measured above atmospheric pressure and psia includes it. Convert the number and keep the same gauge or absolute basis.
  • Confusing kPa with kg/cm². They are different units, and 1 kg/cm² is close to 98 kPa.
  • Moving the decimal point the wrong way between kPa, bar and MPa. 1 bar is 100 kPa and 1 MPa is 1,000 kPa.

Frequently asked questions

How many kPa does 1 psi equal, and how can HVAC teams use this conversion?

One psi equals approximately 6.894757 kPa. For pounds per square inch to kilopascals, multiply the psi reading by 6.894757. For example, 30 psi is approximately 206.843 kPa. The psi to kPa Converter applies this factor, but confirms whether the original reading is gauge or absolute pressure before recording it.

How do you convert a kPa value back to psi accurately?

Divide the kPa value by 6.894757 to get psi. For example, 100 kPa is approximately 14.5038 psi. A kPa to psi converter performs the reverse calculation, although rounding can affect the final decimal places.

How do you convert psi to bar when comparing system pressure readings?

Multiply psi by 0.0689476 to convert it to bar. For example, 100 psi is approximately 6.895 bar. A psi to bar pressure conversion changes the unit, not the original pressure reference.

What is the difference between psig and psia, and why does it matter during conversion?

PSIG measures pressure relative to atmospheric pressure, while PSIA measures pressure relative to a vacuum. For a psig to kPa conversion, multiply the reading by 6.894757 and retain the gauge reference. To convert gauge pressure to absolute pressure, add the local atmospheric pressure expressed in the same unit.

Is 1 kg/cm² equal to 100 kPa, or is the difference important?

No, the two values are not exactly equal. If kg/cm² means kilogram-force per square centimetre (kgf/cm²), 1 kgf/cm² equals 98.0665 kPa, not 100 kPa. The difference matters when accurate pressure values or defined tolerances are required.

When is a refrigerant pressure calculator useful for HVAC work?

A refrigerant pressure calculator can help with unit calculations, but pressure conversion alone cannot confirm correct refrigerant operation. Check the refrigerant type, operating conditions, and the manufacturer's pressure-temperature data before evaluating a system reading. This page converts pressure units; it does not calculate target refrigerant pressures.

How should chilled-water pressure readings be converted for project records?

Multiply psi by 6.894757 to report the reading in kPa, or divide kPa by 6.894757 to obtain psi. A chilled water pressure converter helps keep unit changes consistent in project records. Record whether the measurement is gauge or absolute pressure and compare the result with the system specification.

What should you check before converting pressure for a hydraulic test?

Confirm the original unit and pressure reference before relying on a converted test value. The psi to kPa Converter handles unit arithmetic, while a hydraulic test pressure calculator may help with related calculations. Approved test procedures and manufacturer requirements determine the appropriate test pressure and acceptance criteria.
